For centuries, Paraguay's economy has relied heavily on cattle farming, with vast grasslands and wetlands converted for livestock production. This land-use change has led to significant soil degradation and deforestation. Before the implementation of this project, 100% of the land was used for extensive cattle grazing. In a region where soil health and natural ecosystems have suffered, reforestation is vital to mitigate further environmental damage, restore soil quality, and support global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The project reforests degraded grasslands in the eastern region of Paraguay, specifically in the municipalities of Cazaapá, Maciel, Doctor Moisés Bertoni, and Ñumi. Since 2016, approximately 2,716.71 hectares have been planted with fast-growing species such as Pinus ellioti, Pinus taeda, Eucalyptus urograndis, and Eucalyptus urophila. Around 1,112.55 hectares are planned for future development. The plantations are sustainably managed to produce solid wood, charcoal, and wood chips, addressing the country's demand for timber while reducing reliance on natural forests. Activities include soil preparation, planting, fertilisation, pest control, pruning, thinning, and final harvest, with replanting ensuring the plantation's longevity.
The project aims to capture an annual estimated 204,819 tCO2e emission reduction through the growth of forest biomass. It contributes to reducing pressure on Paraguay’s natural forests and restoring degraded lands by offering an alternative for timber production. Socially, the project seeks to create formal employment opportunities, ensure occupational safety, and provide training sessions with equal access for workers, including initiatives to help increase women’s participation in the workforce. Infrastructure improvements, such as better roads, and investments in research on natural resources are also planned.
