Despite the rapid modernisation enjoyed in China’s cities, a visit to the country’s rural areas tells a very different story. Many families still rely on coal stoves to boil water for purification, to cook their daily meals and to heat their homes. Usage of these inefficient cookstoves leads to the release of harmful pollutants which both negatively affects household members and the environment.
This project will distribute 49,000 solar cookstoves to families in 8 rural villages across Henan province. The clean technology reduces the need for coal to fuel their stoves – cutting emissions, improving air quality and saving families valuable time and money.
In addition to the environmental benefits, such as the reduction in global emissions, this project brings with it many socio-economic advantages such as the creation of jobs for local workers. The majority of employees of the project are female, boosting opportunities for women and gender equality in the country. The health of stove users has additionally improved thanks to the project, with a huge reduction of indoor pollution due to the increased efficiency of the stoves. Finally, access to reliable electricity improves the daily life of households in rural areas which receive cookstoves.
