Project Overview

Energy demands in Laos are partially serviced by the interconnected Thailand Power Grid, which is heavily dominated by polluting thermal power stations that generate electricity by burning fossil fuels. As such, investment in renewables important for Laos on two levels: both for national energy security, and also to facilitate the country's low-carbon continued economic growth.

Solution Description

Downstream from the larger planned Nam Ngum 3 station in Vientiane Province, Central Laos, this 19.2 MW-capacity run-over-river hydropower station aims to generate clean energy for the Lao Power Grid to help bridge the energy supply-demand gap from 2020 onwards. The new hydro plant will not only help meet Lao PDRs domestic electricity demands it will also reduce reliance on imported emissions-intensive power from Thailand, contributing to national energy security and reducing emissions.

Impact

As well as reducing emissions, the Nam Pha Gnai project hopes to create job opportunities for local communities during construction, contributing to regional economic growth. By supporting a stable, reliable and clean electricity supply for Laos, this project envisions to ameliorate local lives and overall promote low-carbon sustainable development.
